Confidence Tip #4 Calculated Risk Taking

Being a “Risk Taker” even when you’re scared of falling on your figurative face is one of the scariest, yet most rewarding of all traits to hone.

We all seem to admire risk takers – especially when, against the odds, they win, or when they give a thrilling performance. There’s something particularly exciting about anyone who obviously feels the fear and still takes a chance: The person who has courage to start a business in a down economy comes to mind; A football team that is considered the underdog that goes for the two point conversion to win the game; Anyone or any group making the choice to put it all on the line to get what they want. These folks seem fearless. And these folks are attractive. They also reap the rewards that would otherwise be impossible if not for the courageous action they take.

And now for the empowering question (this is, afterall, an empowerment site): How about you? When was the last risk you took? What risk did you not take? What was the effect of either taking or not taking a chance?

Fear-Of-Ebola-Public-Domain

Fear and love are the possible choices from which all decisions sprout. And fear is the biggest culprit that holds us back from achieving our wildest, and even not so wild dreams.

Read that again:

…fear is the biggest culprit that holds us back from achieving our wildest, and even not so wild dreams.

If fear is the inner barrier that holds you back from living the life you were born to experience, that take a look at that fear. Give it characteristics:

  • How big is it?
  • What’s it made of?
  • What color is it?
  • Is it liquid, gaseous, solid?
  • What powers does fear have?
  • Can it hurt you? If so, how?
  • What benefit do you get from fear?

Understanding your fear will free the way for expansion as opposed to constriction.

Fear, you likely have heard by now, is quite often described by the memorable acronym False-Evidence-Appearing-Real. When you think of it in this way, we have conjured up some evidence in our mind stories that we label as “real.” We believe those made up stories. And our subconscious mind will go about the process to create the conditions to prove those stories “right.” Our individual story may be that we will fail, or that we will be embarrassed, or perhaps it will be that we will lose everything, or that we will be rejected by loved-ones or the public, or worst of all, that we will feel ashamed of ourselves.

Regardless of your story, it is only a story. And the more it is repeated, the deeper ingrained the belief is, and the more your subconscious mind will work to ensure that story holds true. We must change the mind-grooves of the broken record! And the best way to do that is to create new grooves!

Dale Carnegie warned that, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear.” And the opposite of that is that action breeds confidence and courage. So see your fear and feel your fear and see what is actually at the roots of your fear, and then take steps to transform that fear into fuel for taking inspired action toward the one thing that you must do:

  • Get real about the actual potential outcomes.
  • Clarify what’s the best that can happen?
  • Look at what’s the worst that can happen?
  • What is actually most likely to happen?
  • Do your due diligence and research your dream: Study those who have gone before you on similar paths. What similarities do you share with these “successful” folks?
  • Create a daily step-by-step plan.
  • Take a small, safe inspired step each day.
  • See yourself successful.
  • Commit to doing whatever it takes to achieve your goal with the caveat that you hurt no one, including yourself, in the process.

Begin at this moment to shine the light on the “false evidence” that appears real and keeps you living small in your life. When you do, you will become more realistic about potential outcomes. Your confidence will get a boost and you will be more prepared to take even greater risks with even greater rewards.
